Broccoli has long been thought to be good for your heart and now British scientists at the Imperial College London, think they know how it works for heart disease prevention. The researchers have found evidence that a chemical in broccoli and other green leafy vegetables could boost a natural defence mechanism that protects arteries from clogging, the main cause of heart attacks. In a research study funded by the British Heart Foundation charity and conducted on mice, the British researchers found that sulforaphane, a compound occurring naturally in broccoli, could activate a protective protein which is inactive in parts of the arteries more vulnerable to clogging.
